Re: Labour Court hearings of the 4th November,
and 11th November, 1986.
LCR 10812
...........................
The Court, having considered the submissions in this case and
having examined carefully the accounts of this Company, is
satisfied that urgent cost saving measures must be introduced
to safeguard employment in the Company in the immediate
future.
The Court has examined the impact of the measures proposed by
the Company on the levels of earnings of the workers
concerned and considers that it is important that the
measures be implemented in an equitable and fair manner.

The Court therefore recommends that the Company's proposal
for a pay freeze until 1st October, 1987 be accepted but that
incremental progression along all existing scales should
continue to apply from normal incremental dates.

The Court considers that it is essential that the cost of
overtime working be reduced. This could be achieved by
reducing the incidence of overtime working and, as the
Company has proposed, by reducing the premium which such
working attracts.

The Court having considered the situation, however,
recommends that rather than reduce the overtime premium from
one half to one quarter the Company and the Union should
actively co-operate in the reduction of unnecessary overtime
working immediately.
